THE UFO DEBATE & GOVERNMENT CONCEALMENT OF INFORMATION
For more than half a century, the American public has been engaged in a polarizing debate centered on the existence of “unidentified flying objects.” There are many well-known cases of UFO sightings which have remained unresolved for decades and UFO sightings continue to be reported regularly. Yet despite an overwhelming amount of evidence supporting the existence (although not explaining the origin) of UFOs, many people remain highly skeptical of UFO sightings and related phenomena. Skeptics often argue that there must be some “logical” explanation for UFOs, for example, that they are in fact secret military aircraft. Yet it seems that no one, neither believers nor skeptics of the UFO phenomenon, are ever able to provide truly definitive evidence to support their claims.
Examining the history of the UFO controversy in the United States, it appears that there is at least one fact that believers and skeptics should be able to agree on: that the US government certainly knows more about UFOs than it wants the general public to know. Although it is impossible to know the scope or the nature of the US government’s knowledge about UFOs, there is ample evidence to suggest that the US government has more information about UFOs than it has made public. Information from a variety of sources, including internal investigations and ex-government employees, has revealed that the US government has provided inconsistent information regarding UFOs and in that some cases, the government has made important information regarding UFOs simply “disappear.”
Although there is very little we actually know for sure regarding UFOs, we do know for sure that the US government knows more than we know. Although the majority of questions regarding UFOs remain unanswered, it is possible that some of these questions could be answered using information that the US government has managed to keep confidential. The information the US government has kept secret regarding UFOs will not necessarily weigh in favor of one side of the argument or the other. It will surely, however, help both sides make more informed opinions regarding UFOs. Therefore if we wish to keep the lively discussion about UFOs in the US alive and progressing, it would be enormously helpful to be able to incorporate information which is currently “classified” into the greater public discourse. In order to keep the great UFO debate going, it is important for both sides to acknowledge that, yes, there is information about UFOs that the government is not telling us.
